Idea to Reality: Students Make It Happen with PatternMaker

Joan McKenna teaches clothing design through San Diego Continuing Education (California, USA). In the fall of 2015 and Spring of 2016, McKenna taught two design classes. Five of the many students went the distance from idea to creation, working their way through various steps to the final product. Along the way students used PatternMaker Software to further design and refine the pattern used for the final product.

Joan's students graciously provided PatternMaker with the following images to provide an overview to illustrate how PatternMaker helps in the design sequence. The five students below began with a sketch and finished with the actual product. The screen captures of PatternMaker were created locally from PatternMaker files created by the students. Only a selection of the PatternMaker files are included here.

The steps presented here reflect the basic steps in going from idea to reality.

  • Croquis: a rough sketch of the desired clothing
  • Design in PatternMaker: sections and their measurements
  • Toile: test producet using light-weight, inexpensive fabric
  • Production: final product with the desired material

The following flow chart gives a visual representation of the basic steps that are reflected in each student's set of images.
